The Temple Swamimalai
Location
Tamil Nadu. This temple is man-made on top of a hill, which is 60 feet tall. The temple of Swamimalai is near Kumbakonam (Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu). To reach the temple, we have to climb 60 steps. And the interesting part is: Each step is named after one year of the Tamil calendar. Since the Tamil calendar has a cycle of 60 years, all the 60 steps together represent those 60 years, one step for one year.

It is one of the six holy abodes of Lord Murugan (Aarupadaiveedu). As per Hindu mythology, Lord Murugan preached the 'Pranava Mandirum' to his own Father (Shiva).

HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE
This temple is very, very old. It is from the Sangam period, which means around the 2nd century BCE, 2000 years old, can you imagine! During the Sangam period, Tamil culture and literature were at their peak. Then came the mighty Chola dynasty, the most powerful kingdom in South Indian history, around the 9th century CE. The Chola kings took an interest in this temple and helped the temple to expand and develop it in a big way. Then they made this temple even grander and more beautiful! But very sadly, this temple also faced the test of time. During the 18th century, there were many wars and conflicts happening in the region. And then this got damaged due to these wars. But the good news is, the temple survived.
And now, It is managed and taken care of by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. So, the temple is in safe and official hands!

This special alloy is used to make these beautiful idols in this temple. These idols are made right nearby in Swamimalai itself, by using an ancient technique called the lost-wax method. And the cool part is that this is one of the oldest metal casting techniques in the world. So, Swamimalai is not just famous for the temple, it is also famous for this incredible bronze craftsmanship.
